  3. DrGizmo, my Goth son Kit says congrats on the doctorate of philosophy in Gothic English Literature(at least that’s howe we understand it)!!
Would u give him some suggestions of specific Gothic literature he might read, he reads allthe time he’s not playing games. 🙂
    Thanks

    • Ohai, Mitsu! Thank you very much to both you and Kit 🙂 I will celebrate even more once the corrections are out of the way!

If Kit fancies some ‘classic’ Gothic, so to speak, which is full of evil villains and helpless heroines in spooky castles, then I’d suggest the big names of the 18th century – Radcliffe, Walpole and Lewis. If he fancies something a little later, then the Victorian Gothic revival has some great ‘classics’ of its own, such as Shelley, Stevenson and Stoker. If he fancies something a bit more modern (as I myself often do 😉 ) then he could try Margaret Atwood (e.g. Lady Oracle and The Handmaid’s Tale) or Angela Carter (e.g. Heroes and Villains or The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories or and Nights at the Circus). A lot of people describe Atwood and Carter as ‘feminist Gothic’ and they weave some great stories. Also, he might like Patrick McGrath’s Spider, Iain Banks’ The Wasp Factory, or Toni Morrison’s Beloved. And if he fancies something a bit different, then I also studied some graphic novels – From Hell (soooo much better than the movie!), Sin City, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and the Sandman series are probably my favourite. I hope that helps – any other questions and I’d be more than happy to chat 🙂

P.S. As you probably know, there can be some disturbing scenarios in Gothic literature and there are some scenes in these texts that might not be suitable for younger readers – I don’t know how old Kit is, but I just wanted to mention that you may want to check out some of the content before you pass these suggestions on to him. I don’t have kids myself and I’d hate to suggest something unsuitable by accident!

  4. Sorry it has taken me so long to get bak to u, drgizMo. Thanks for the suggestions. Kit is 18 so no worries about inappropriateness. Thank u for concern, tho.
    😀
